Sons of Porter

Sons of Porter draws its name and inspiration from the frontier figure Orrin Porter Rockwell. On a cold Christmas Eve after years of imprisonment, Rockwell returned to the home of Joseph Smith, battle-worn and scarcely recognizable until Joseph stepped forward, greeted him as a brother, and declared that so long as Porter kept his hair and remained faithful to his duty, no bullet or blade would take his life. From that moment grew the legend that followed him across the frontier. Feared by some and respected by many, Rockwell was sometimes called the “Destroying Angel,” yet those who knew him saw a man bound by loyalty, personal oath, and a fierce duty to defend those under his care. In later years he served as one of the first lawmen in the Salt Lake Valley, helping protect the early settlements of the Great Basin.

Inspired by those enduring ideals, Sons of Porter exists to cultivate men of character, discipline, and service. We believe strong men build strong families, strong families build strong communities, and strong communities sustain a free and ordered society.

Sons of Porter seeks to preserve and strengthen the living inheritance of Utah and the American West. Drawing inspiration from the frontier communities of the Great Basin and the settlements of early Deseret, the brotherhood is dedicated to preserving the history, art, literature, and civic traditions that shaped this region.
